DKB Legends Cup 2023

Did you know that the DKB does esports?
For those of you who don’t know – esports, short for 'electronic sports', are competitive computer games that often incorporate team-based strategies and boast their own substantial tournaments. These matches attract professional players and are broadcast globally, allowing fans to spectate. Notably, players can earn a living through these competitions, creating an entire industry centered around gaming.

If you're already familiar with esports, you might be intrigued to learn about the DKB's initiative to foster budding gamers through their #DKBDiamonds project This initiative encompasses creating a professional team, organizing in-house tournaments among employees, and supporting the esports community at large. Recently, I participated in one such tournament, and I'm excited to share my experience of this extraordinary initiative that enriches the DKB community.

This spring, the DKB organized the DKB Legends Cup, a tournament focused on the popular online game, League of Legends. The game, fundamentally a strategic clash between two teams of five aiming to punch the other team’s home-base crystal until it explodes, was played completely remotely, allowing employees to participate from the comfort of their homes. Our diverse team included a DKB Service colleague, a business intelligence officer, a customer loans expert, a trainee and a software developer from the Code Factory (yours truly). This tournament provided an opportunity for me to interact with colleagues from departments with which I typically have minimal contact, enhancing our mutual understanding and camaraderie. As someone who used to work for the DKB Grund (another subsidary of DKB) and is now working for the DKB Code Factory, it was like a backstage pass, opening the curtains to management styles and strategies across DKB’s family tree, discovering uncanny parallels and unique approaches. The highlight, however, was discovering that one of our teammates was an active user of the internal app I help develop and maintain, reinforcing the invisible threads that connect us within this vast corporate tapestry.

The battle for 3rd place and the finals took place at Xperion, a gaming hub located in the heart of Berlin's Alexanderplatz. Participants were provided with top-tier gaming equipment, eliminating the need to bring personal hardware. This event was open to all DKB employees, especially those unfamiliar with the gaming world, to foster a broader understanding of esports. Moderators were on hand to elucidate game mechanics and provide play-by-play commentary.

In addition to providing a fun, interactive experience, the tournament helped to build stronger relationships among colleagues. As a tangible memento of the event, each of the top four teams was presented with gaming mousepads featuring the tournament logo. The top three teams received cash prizes in the form of Paysafe cards, and the victorious team took home bespoke trophies.

The DKB Legends Cup was an incredibly rewarding event, and I eagerly anticipate participating in the next one.
