monster of the week | episode 2

CoFa does Pen&Paper RPGs!

Currently we’ve decided on a system called Monster of The Week and is described as “…a standalone action-horror RPG for 3-5 people. Hunt high school beasties a la Buffy the Vampire Slayer, travel the country to bring down unnatural creatures like the Winchester brothers of Supernatural, or head up the government investigation like Mulder and Scully.” We will be chronicling our sessions like episodes of a TV show, so everyone knows where we’ve left off last session. And so, without further ado, here’s a recap of our last session.

Village of Handfast: Episode 2 (premiered 14.03.2023)

Having found no leads on the cause of the strange happenings in the village of Handfast, the hunters decide to search for information in old local newspapers – a collection of which Jane keeps in her basement. There, after taking a closer look at all the locations of strange happenings, Irina manages to make out a pattern (not seen by anyone else) and predict that the next attack should happen tonight at this very motel.

After some disagreements on the course of action, Debbie tries to bait the assailant on the motel’s parking lot with Timothy keeping a close eye on her from the shadows, while Irina and Dave keep watch inside. The plan partially succeeds as the lights inside and around the motel go out and a woman’s scream can be heard. Debbie and Timothy sprint to her aid and see a robed hulking figure standing above a collapsed woman. Timothy instantly unleashes a magic gust of wind, pushing the brute away as Debbie lunges in, silver flail in hand, to protect the assaulted victim. A brief exchange of blows between 17-year-old Debbie and the over 2-meter-tall ogre in a cap, the creature fades into the shadows and escapes into the night.

Meanwhile Irina and Dave become trapped within the lightless motel as some unseen childish giggling force plays pranks on them. The entity (whatever it was) seems to flee as soon as the brute retreats.

As Timothy hurries to the unconscious victim, the commotion causes motel guests to wake up and peer out the window and see him, clutching a sword and bending over a woman lying on the ground. An awkward situation to end up in...
